Den f\u00f6r Hammondorgeln karakt\u00e4ristiska tonhjulstekniken uppfanns dock redan under 1830-talet men fick sin funktion i en orgel genom Hammonds uppfinning synkronmotorn. Hammondorgeln tillverkades av The Hammond Organ Company i Chicago och var fr\u00e5n b\u00f6rjan avsedd att vara ett billigt alternativ till den traditionella piporgeln i kyrkorna. Den kom d\u00e4rigenom att anv\u00e4ndas mycket inom gospelmusiken och blev senare ett standardinstument f\u00f6r jazz och blues under 1950-, 60- och 70-talen. Dessa orglar anv\u00e4nds ofta fortfarande \u00e4ven om de sista tonhjulsorglarna l\u00e4mnade Hammondfabriken under mitten av 1970-talet.
